Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition where an individual seeks and requires too much appreciation and attention from others, and also considers himself highly important, too good and perfect. This disrupted thought process creates conflict in relationships. The feeling of superiority actually comes from underlying low self-esteem, which reflects when the person cannot tolerate any criticism.
Today we will get to know about some management techniques for this disorder:
- Focusing on maintaining relationships: As this disorder brings relationship problems, it is necessary to solve the issues with close persons.
- Accepting the disorder: Often the person suffers from narcissistic personality disorder denies the fact that they have any condition. But it is crucial to understand the problem and seek support.
- Eliminating other mental health conditions first: Substance use, depression, stress, whatever the other condition that has coexistence, needs to be treated first.
- Being more understanding and increasing tolerance level: Self-esteem should not be varied with other people’s appreciation or criticism.
- Learning internal locus of control: It is a psychological term where people do everything for self satisfaction and gratification rather than for the admiration from others. One must learn this skill to overcome the disorder.
- Respecting others: It is vital to respect others and not to think that ‘I am the best’.
- Co-operate with mental health specialist: It is important to maintain the treatment plans provided by the psychologist or psychiatrist, otherwise it will not be possible to get rid of from the disorder.
It is comparatively a complex condition where the individual may not be willing to accept the problem and act as if everything is normal. For that, the family, friends, colleagues can come forward with care and support so that the loved person can live a disorder-free life.
