Stress is a basic thing in our day-to-day life. Generally we use the term when we feel that something becomes too much to handle. But stress is not always a “problem”,this can be good or can be bad. The psychologists describe the phenomena by two different terms. ‘Eustress’ and ‘Distress’. Stress that has positive effects in your life,is eustress, which is helpsome in maintaining daily activities. Say for, pre-exam stress, a mandatory to glue you to study before exam. On the other hand, stress that has negative effects, significantly undermines the mental and physical health, is distress. For example, divorce, which downbears your wellbeing and conspires to isolate you from your normal life for a reasonable period.
WHO says that stress has become a worldwide epidemic. About 75% of adults reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. At present, workplace stress is the most common stress factor as revealed by several cross-sectional studies. And surprisingly, in the developed countries, the prevalence is more, like in China the highest rate has been reported. Stress levels in the workplaces are rising with 6 in 10 workers in major global economies. 80% of workers feel stress on the job, which is a frustrating fact indeed.
If you think of the causes of stress, it actually covers a broad arena, starting from rising up early in tomorrow morning,to not getting a job even after a hundred settings of interview. However, the major sources of stress are money and workplace and family responsibilities, which makes us bother in daily life.
To measure how much stress you are suffering from in your life, there is a scale called the Holmes and Rahe Scale. As per this scale 10 most stressful life events have been noted, among which the top four are:
- Death of a spouse or child
- Divorce
- Marital separation
- Imprisonment
Lastly, though the causes and types of stress differ a lot, the increasing rate of sufferers worth attention and intervention on an urgent basis. In any situation you feel stressed, the core management protocol lies upon identification of the stressor and lifestyle modification. So training programs should be started imperatively to make people learn how to overcome different stressful situations.
