Emotional intelligence (EI), an important topic in psychology, came into the limelight during 1990. Emotional intelligence can be defined as the capability of dealing with one’s own emotions and another person’s emotions. It is a complex regulation of emotional balance. This ability can be acquired through intentional attempts whereas all of us are born with this capacity that can vary. Emotional intelligence is measured by using self-report techniques and is indicated by EQ (Emotional Quotient).
Levels of emotional intelligence: There are 4 levels of emotional intelligence which are:
- Perceiving emotions
- Reasoning with emotions
- Understanding emotions
- Managing emotions
Benefits of emotional intelligence: There are a lot of benefits of developing emotional intelligence like :
- Helps dealing with criticism
- Incorporates non-judgemental attitude
- Contributes understanding own reactions
- Enhances ability to pay attention while someone is talking
- Gives strength to deal with mistakes
- Builds empathy for other persons
- Provides problem solving capacity in regular life
- Develops communication skills
- Helps maintaining relationships with others
- Generates appropriate reactions and replies
Developing emotional intelligence: There are some certain ways by which we can develop emotional intelligence such as:
- Listening carefully what others are saying
- Trying to understand their situation and emotional state
- Reflecting upon what they are saying
We all should cultivate emotional intelligence within ourselves for a better world where people have feelings for other people.
