Anaemia is a medical condition caused by the reduction in the concentration of haemoglobin (Hb) within the bloodstream. Even though anaemia and mental health disorders are discrete entities they can exert a significant influence on an individual’s overall well-being. Nevertheless, recent evidence indicates a potentially multifaceted association between these two phenomena, especially in the female population of reproductive age. According to World Health Organization (WHO), it is a significant public health concern in developing nations, affecting about 500 million women aged between 15-45 years. Even though Bangladesh has a relatively high prevalence rate (41.8%) of anaemia in women, no research has been conducted in Bangladesh to investigate the potential correlation between anaemia and mental health. However, a study examining the associated comorbidities of depressive symptoms in postpartum women identified a potential association between anaemia and an elevated risk of postpartum depression, with an estimated relative risk of 1.38. Iron deficiency was also found associated with bipolar disorder and tic disorder.
The following can be done to maintain the haemoglobin level:
📌Increasing nutrient intake, especially iron (Fe), protein, and Vitamin C
📌Not skipping breakfast and improper dietary habits such as eating fried and fast food
📌Avoiding the consumption of Fe absorption inhibitors, such as food containing polyphenols, and phytates (black and herbal tea, coffee, legumes, cereals, fruit, and vegetables)
📌Avoiding tea and coffee, immediately after having a meal
📌Keeping the menstrual cycle in check as it is an indicator of anaemia or low haemoglobin level
📌Consuming iron tablets as per Doctor’s prescription
Lastly, we can conclude that it is imperative to acknowledge the intricate relationship between anaemia and mental health disorders in women to deliver comprehensive healthcare. By adopting a holistic approach, healthcare professionals have the potential to assist women in attaining an optimal state of physical and mental well-being.
