Tips to control OCD

Many of you may have already heard of this term: OCD, broadly, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. This term contains two words, one is obsession (thinking the same thing again and again), and another one is compulsion (doing the same thing again and again). For example: spending a huge amount of time cleaning or washing, repeating specific words, opening and closing the same doors repeatedly, etc.

OCD can be controlled by following a few simple techniques:

  1. Trying relaxation: Relaxation can be beneficial for people who are dealing with OCD. Soothing music, meditation, and breathing exercise are highly effective to acquire control over one’s own thoughts and behaviours.
  2. Focusing on the present: Practicing mindfulness can be an easier way to think only about the present.
  3. Trying not to be perfect: Being a perfectionist can lead to OCD and can facilitate starting episodes of obsessive thoughts and behaviour. Always remember, it is OK not to be perfect.
  4. Taking things slow: It may not be possible to stop obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviour altogether. While trying to get rid of OCD, it is always a good idea to try step-by-step rather than try everything at the same time.
  5. Managing anxiety and stress: Anxiety and stress can be stimuli for OCD. So, to manage OCD, one must manage his or her stress and anxiety. These are a few ways of managing worries: reducing caffeine intake, using stress relief balls, writing down the reasons behind stress, etc.
  6. Sharing the issue with others: Sharing the problems with a trusted person can be helpful to stay on track and deal with OCD.
  7. Physical exercise: Physical exercise emphasizes mental health and is helpful for minimizing OCD. Walking, dancing, doing household chores, or any physical activity can help a person with OCD.
  8. Taking therapy and counseling: OCD must be treated under the supervision of professional experts (therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist) if required. It is possible to live a normal life with OCD if it is under control. So, rather than getting afraid of OCD, one should try to solve it.
